Penny Rodgers (Borges)

Penny Borges passed away in Austin, Texas on Friday, June 22, 2018. She was born in Lubbock, Texas on April 3, 1953, the daughter of Robert Rodgers and Erma Hammer Rodgers. Penny graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a degree in Music and Education. She began her career teaching migrant students at Georgetown High School. Realizing her true calling was in school counseling, she earned her Master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and for many years was an elementary school counselor in Georgetown public schools. After retiring from Georgetown, Penny returned to education for several years as counselor and administrator at St. Andrew's Episcopal Middle School in Austin. Penny is survived by her husband Darryl Borges of Austin; by her daughter Shannon Stagner and her husband Christopher von der Gruen and their son Maxwell Otto von der Gruen, of Austin; by her brother Terry Rodgers and his wife Kathy of Lubbock, and their son Robert Rodgers of Odessa; by her aunt Mary Anderson of Plano and uncle Martin Hammer of Del Rio; and by many loving cousins. A memorial service will be held for Penny at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 14, in the sanctuary of University United Methodist Church in Austin. Reception following in Fellowship Hall. The church is located at 2409 Guadalupe St. Parking is available in the Platinum lot across Guadalupe, or in UT's San Antonio Garage, on San Antonio St. just west of the lot. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).
